Irish incumbent Eircom plans to become one of the first operators in the world to roll out vectoring technology in its fibre-optic network in the Republic, increasing maximum broadband speeds to 100Mbps. In a statement, group chief executive officer Herb Hribar confirmed that Eircom will also be making vectoring technology available to other licensed operators (OLOs) in Ireland on a wholesale basis. Hribar estimates that some 45% of Eircom’s network will be upgraded with 100Mbps speeds via vectoring, while the remainder of the network will enjoy a boost from 24Mbps to a maximum 70Mbps. Vectoring technology is designed to cancel out noise in order to make connections ‘quieter’ for stronger broadband signals.
