Cellcos enforce real-name registration for handset purchases

16 Sep 2013

China’s trio of mobile operators – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom – have implemented a new registration scheme requiring new users to register their real name to purchase a handset, reports China Daily. The new measures are in accordance with a directive from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to crack down on unsolicited messages. Users that have not registered their real name will be able to continue using their phone as normal, but will not be able to transfer ownership of the device or apply for a new SIM if the original was lost.
