MTN Ghana, the country’s largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers, has announced that it will offer its subscribers six minutes of free voice calls as a compensation for the network disruptions experienced in August 2013, Cellular News reports. The gesture of goodwill, however, has been criticised by subscribers as insufficient.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in August 2013 an estimated 15% of MTN Ghana’s subscribers in the capital of Accra experienced signal interruptions, and the company attributed the outage to ‘an extensive ongoing modernisation and transformation [of its systems]’. MTN Ghana added: ‘During the process [of modernisation], the network interface link connection on the switch experienced intermittent errors resulting in the links failing. As a result, voice and data service delivery were affected, which made it difficult for subscribers to make and receive calls, as well as [use] data and SMS [services].’ The company faced a fine by telecoms regulator the National Communication Authority (NCA) if it failed to submit a compensation plan.
