Jio inks MoU for Kolkata rollout

4G start-up Reliance Jio Infocomm, a subsidiary of petrochemical giant Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) regarding the installation of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in the city, the Economic Times reports. Under the deal, Jio will install 750km of fibre-optic cabling within KMC’s jurisdiction to support the planned 4G network. KMC’s Mayor-in-Charge Atin Ghosh noted that the KMC would receive a one-off payment of INR260 million (USD4.05 million) as part of the agreement. The deployment is expected to cost around INR40 billion and is due to be completed during the first quarter of 2014.
