Airtel enters talks with Comium owner over acquisition

9 Sep 2013

According to a series of local media reports officials representing Indian mobile giant Bharti Airtel have entered into discussions with Nizar Dalloul, the Lebanese founder of the Comium Group, regarding the potential acquisition of the latter’s Ivorian assets. Cote d’Ivoire is one of the few African markets that Airtel currently lacks a presence in, and it is believed that a deal for the struggling mobile unit will include debts of around CFA60 billion (USD120.9 million). Agence Ecofin reports that Comium is in dire financial straits, and is no longer able to pay the salaries of its employees. At this stage though it is unclear if Airtel is also considering acquisitions of Comium’s operations in Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia.
