The Economic Times writes that Bharti Airtel, India’s largest cellco by subscribers, is the favourite to take over wireless operator Loop Mobile, citing multiple sources aware of the negotiations. A final deal is dependent on the government clarifying a number of regulatory issues relating to the acquisition of spectrum through mergers and acquisitions and licence renewal fees. Loop’s concession for 900MHz spectrum in Mumbai is due to expire in September 2014, and a future deal will depend on whether the government will allow Loop – or a potential buyer – to extend that licence, or if it will swap the 900MHz frequencies for 1800MHz airwaves. A spokesperson for Bharti Airtel dismissed the rumours as speculation.
