Alternative operator SimbaNET Tanzania has successfully deployed Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) fibre technology in the country’s capital Dar es Salaam, the Daily News reports, citing the firm’s general manager Stanley Ayitta. The new GPON infrastructure increases bandwidth and allows for greater communications speeds for internet connections in the city, as well as improving reliability, he said. Ayitta went on to say that SimbaNET’s new infrastructure employs point-to-point, self-healing technology to support a variety of web-based communications applications such as telemedicine and videoconferencing. SimbaNET Tanzania is a licensed public data operator, with concessions to provide national and international services, including internet connectivity via submarine optical fibre networks. It is also a partner in Tanzania’s national ICT backbone project, dubbed NICTBB, having points of presence (PoP) in 14 regions using the NICTBB across the country.
