Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has said that the new entrant to the mobile sector, Vietnamese-backed Viettel is still within its deadline for launching services, TeleSemana writes. Telecoms minister Carlos Paredes added the cellco is rolling out coverage ‘according to schedule’ and is working with the MTC to expedite the process.
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Viettel Peru was awarded the nation’s fourth wireless licence in January 2011, consisting of 25MHz in the 1900MHz band. August the following year saw the provider bag further spectrum holdings, winning rights to frequencies in the 900MHz band. The cellco is due to launch commercial services this year, and has to date activated networks in Huarochiri, Huaura, Chinca, Ica and Trujilo, albeit for technical trials only.
