Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH), the state-backed Fijian company, has completed its takeover of Fiji International Telecoms Limited (FINTEL), raising its stake from 51% to 100% by acquiring shares previously held directly by the government. ATH paid USD9 million for the stake, according to the Fiji Times as cited by Telecompaper. Established in December 1976, FINTEL is the sole provider of international telephony in Fiji. It operates a submarine fibre-optic cable terminal and a satellite earth station at Vatuwaqa, Suva. A cable connection to the Southern Cross Cable (SCC) undersea network has direct links with Australia, New Zealand and the US.
