Digicel Bermuda lower charges as Group ‘eliminates’ roaming fees in the Caribbean

14 Aug 2013

Digicel Bermuda customers will soon enjoy the ‘lowest rates ever for SMS, voice and data roaming’ in the US, after the parent group eliminated roaming charges in Digicel’s Caribbean networks. The new lower roaming rates to the US will be available for a monthly fee to Digicel Bermuda customers starting 1 October, with Digicel Bermuda CEO Wayne Caines noting: ‘At Digicel, we want to completely change customers’ views of roaming. We are working hard to allow customers to use their phones while roaming without fears of high charges when they return home. This initiative from Digicel means Bermudians travelling to other Digicel networks or the US will be able to use their phones just as conveniently and affordably as they do at home.’

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, on 9 August pan-Caribbean wireless carrier Digicel announced that from 1 October 2013 it will no longer charge roaming rates for its subscribers travelling within its Caribbean footprint and the US. Under the new strategy, customers will pay domestic rates for voice, SMS and data whilst roaming in the Caribbean and the US. The offering was trialled as the ‘Same Rates a Yaad’ plan in Jamaica, before being rolled out to Barbados, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Digicel Group’s commercial director Brian Finn, commented in a press release: ‘At Digicel, we are always looking for new ways to drive value to our customer base and to keep people connected…This is all about giving our customers the freedom to communicate as they wish when they travel without the fear of running up high bills.’
