13 Aug 2013

NEC Corporation and PT NEC Indonesia have signed a contract with Indonesia’s largest telecoms company by revenue, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT Telkom) to build the Papua Cable System, a high-bandwidth optical submarine cable system that will connect Indonesia’s Papua Provinces on the island of New Guinea. The new link will span 2,000km and will be the first submarine cable system to connect the province, it said. The Papua Cable System is expected to help bridge the country’s digital divide and is designed to carry transmission speeds of 40Gbps and 100Gbps, aiming to complete PT Telkom’s nationwide fibre-optic networks in Indonesia. The new link is slated for completion by the end of 2014.
