In 2Q13 Advanced Info Service (AIS) reported total revenue of THB36.007 billion (USD1.150 billion), an increase of 4.5% year-on-year, underpinned by a growing demand for mobile internet. Quarter-on-quarter, Thailand’s largest cellco by subscribers posted a 3.9% revenue decline, mainly from softer device sales and reduced voice revenue. In 1H13, total revenue was THB73.484 billion, up by 5.5% y-o-y. Despite higher expenses from AIS’ 2100MHz 3G network launch in May, EBITDA in 2Q13 increased by 4% y-o-y to THB15.753 billion, although q-o-q EBITDA decreased by 3.3% in line with the q-o-q revenue drop. In 1H13, EBITDA was up 3.9% at THB32.046 billion.
AIS’ smartphone users increased to 8.3 million at the end of June 2013 from seven million in the previous quarter, while its total subscriber base grew to 37.7 million with a net addition of 548,000 subscribers in the three-month period. Blended average revenue per user (ARPU) in 2Q13 decreased to THB244, due to seasonality. Year-on-year, blended ARPU decreased 2.8%. In 1H13, non‐voice revenue increased 27% y-o-y, but voice revenue was flat y-o-y while service revenue, excluding interconnection, grew 6.2% y-o-y, in line with the full-year guidance of 6%‐8%. With the new 3G 2100MHz network now available in 56 provinces, nearly 3.9 million, or 10%, of the total subscriber base were registered as users of the new service as of 31 June 2013. The network rollout is being accelerated and 2100MHz services are expected to be available ‘in all urban areas’ nationwide within this year. The target for 2100MHz subscribers by end-2013 has been raised to 10 million‐12 million, due to the positive response from consumers and a faster network coverage rollout than targeted.
