Vodafone UK sets 4G launch date

8 Aug 2013

British cellco Vodafone UK has confirmed its 4G launch plans, revealing that it expects to inaugurate its LTE network on the same day as rival O2 UK, 29 August. In announcing a range of new 4G-ready ‘Red’ tariffs, which will be available from 12 August, Vodafone said that its 4G services will initially be available in London only, though it has said that it will be expanded to Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield before the end of this year. Looking further ahead, the cellco has said it is aiming to expand 4G coverage to 98% of the population, though the timeframe for doing so was simply cited as being ‘over the next couple of years’.

With a view to swaying customers to sign up for its LTE offerings, rather than those of its rivals, Vodafone has announced that those signing up for its Red 4G plans will be able to choose between a free Spotify Premium subscription or free access to Sky Sports Mobile TV.
