Vimpelcom still keen on Tele2 Russia

Russian telco Vimpelcom is still interested in acquiring Tele2 Russia despite the fact that the company was sold to domestic bank VTB earlier this year for USD3.6 billion. Although Vimpelcom and rival mobile operator MTS were both foiled in their attempts to buy Tele2 earlier this year, Vimpelcom CEO Jo Lunder has told Dow Jones Newswire that his company is still hoping to strike a deal to gain control of Tele2, with VTB known to have acquired the telco purely as an investment asset. ‘We wanted to buy Tele2 and our view has not changed. We would be very interested in engaging the process with VTB on Tele2,’ Lunder revealed.
