Ministry pushes plan to fold telecoms, post regulators into new body

The Slovakian ministry responsible for communications, transport and tourism – the Ministry of Transport, Construction & Regional Development of the Slovak Republic (MDVRR, formerly the Ministry of Transport, Posts & Telecommunications [MTPT]) – is reported to be drafting legislation to fold both the Telecommunications Office of the Slovak Republic (TU SR) and the Postal Regulatory Office into a newly created multi-sector regulator in 2014. According to the Ministry, quoted by local news outlet Zive.sk, it aims to reduce the number of financial organisations which come under the umbrella of the transport authority and thereby reduce costs. However, the TU SR opposes such a plan as it claims it would be easier and cheaper to merge the postal regulator into the telecoms watchdog and not to scrap both organisations; TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that back in December 2010 the TU SR aired a proposal that it could feasibly follow the example of some other European telecoms regulators and absorb the Postal Regulatory Office.
