Israel’s newest mobile network operator Golan Telecom – which launched commercially in May 2012 – is said to have received a proposal to acquire a controlling stake in the market leader Cellcom. According to Globes Online, Golan’s owners Xavier Niel and Michael Golan have allegedly been contacted via investment bank Lazard with the proposal, which they are said to be seriously considering. While Cellcom’s current controlling shareholder IDB Holding Corp has denied that the cellco is up for sale, the report cites a senior source close to both Niel and Golan as confirming that they have received an invitation to buy it.
