NTT DoCoMo to upgrade LTE speeds to 150Mbps in Kawasaki

26 Jul 2013

Japan’s largest telco in terms of subscribers NTT DoCoMo has announced plans to upgrade its ‘Xi’ Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to maximum downlink speeds of 150Mbps in Kawasaki, Japan’s ninth most populated city, from 30 July 2013. The ‘pre-launch verification’ in Kawasaki comes ahead of NTT DoCoMo’s planned launch of a commercial 150Mbps LTE service in parts of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya on 1 October, although the company clarified that the advertised transmission speeds will depend on network traffic and transmission environment. The company also reported that it has recently expanded its 4G network footprint to cover more than 130 cities as of July 2013.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, DoCoMo was the first company in Japan to commercially launch LTE services in December 2010. NTT DoCoMo expects to sign up a total of 25 million Xi LTE subscribers in FY2013.
