Unicom to shut down PHS service

25 Jul 2013

China Unicom will closed down its fixed-wireless PHS service by the end of September this year, Chinese language news portal Sina Tech writes. Unicom’s PHS subscribers have reportedly been informed of the plan and urged to transfer to other networks or services. As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Chinese telecoms regulator the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) instructed PHS operators in 2009 to close down the systems by end-2011 to vacate the 1900MHz spectrum for China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA service.

Whilst the service has remained in use long after the closure date ordered by the MIIT, the telco has ceased signing up new subscribers and no longer carries out maintenance work on the existing infrastructure, which has led to a decline in quality of service. Since 2009, PHS subscribers have complained of deteriorating coverage, stability and call quality.
