Vodafone NZ stops subscriber rot after nine quarters

23 Jul 2013

Vodafone New Zealand has announced that it gained 19,000 mobile customers in the three months ended 30 June 2013, bringing an end to a run of nine straight quarters in which it lost subscribers. Auckland-based Vodafone claimed 2.326 million mobile customers at the end of the second quarter, up from 2.307 million customers three months earlier. The subscriber boost accompanies Vodafone’s amalgamation of the assets of TelstraClear on 31 March, and although it has not been explicitly stated, it is assumed that Vodafone’s user base has increased as a result of the addition of former TelstraClear mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) customers; the virtual operator piggybacked on Vodafone’s network since February 2010. Vodafone also noted that its percentage of pre-paid customers fell from 66.7% to 64.4% quarter-on-quarter.
