Yoigo inaugurates LTE network in Madrid

19 Jul 2013

Spanish mobile operator Xfera Moviles, which operates under the ‘Yoigo’ banner, has launched commercial 4G services in line with its earlier announced plans, according to Telecompaper.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in May 2013 Yoigo set out its stall to be the first Spanish cellco to introduce LTE technology commercially, though it was beaten to the punch by both Vodafone Spain and Orange Espana, which launched at end-May and early-July, respectively.

As per Yoigo’s original plans its LTE services are understood to be initially available in Madrid only, although the cellco is now said to be aiming to extend its network footprint to 48% of the population by the end of this year, up from the original goal of 37%; by the end of this year it hopes to offer 4G services to more than 22.5 million people in 100 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
