Telefonica UK, the parent company of mobile operator O2, has signed a ten-year fibre backhaul deal with Virgin Media Business to support the growth in demand for mobile data services, ahead of O2’s launch of Long Term Evolution (LTE) services later this summer. According to ComputerWorld UK, Virgin will connect O2 base stations to its fibre network via a high-capacity Ethernet service, which Telefonica hopes will give its O2 customers faster access to mobile data. Each one of the high speed links will deliver speeds of 1Gbps between the respective cell site and their aggregation network.
