Government committee ‘pushes forward’ NT privatisation; sub-committee formed

8 Jul 2013

The state committee formed to oversee the process of finding a strategic partner for Nepal Telecom (NT) has taken a decision to establish a sub-committee to explore potential partners, prepare the legal framework for privatisation and prepare bid documents before sending proposals to the cabinet, Telecompaper reports, citing statements from Finance Ministry undersecretary Basu Sharma relayed by local news site eKantipur. The latest decision to move the privatisation proposals forward comes after widespread criticism of heel dragging in the process, which was first recommended by a communications ministry-led taskforce in early 2010, says TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, which adds that in September 2012 the special government committee appointed by the Finance Ministry recommended the sale of a 30% stake in NT to be completed ‘within the next 18 to 24 months’.
