According to an unconfirmed report by MegaZap, a blog focusing on French overseas territories, Reunion’s dominant mobile phone operator Societe Reunionnaise du Radiotelephone (SRR) plans to introduce dual carrier (DC)-HSPA+ technology from 8 August. However, subscribers wishing to access advanced 42Mbps data speeds will be asked to pay a EUR5 (USD6.5) monthly premium.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in 1996 SRR became the first company to offer mobile telephony on Reunion. It enjoyed a monopoly until 2000 when it was joined by Orange Reunion and Outremer Telecom.
