Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), Russia’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has hired Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to roll out its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) in Moscow and the Central Federal District. Under the terms of three-year agreement, NSN will supply equipment for the deployment of a frequency division duplex (FDD) LTE network, also taking charge of network implementation, planning, optimisation and systems integration.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in September 2012 MTS launched a time division duplex (TDD) LTE network in Moscow, which now encompasses more than 2,000 base stations. In May 2013, MTS launched the first portion of its FDD LTE network in Moscow. In two years, MTS plans to cover 80% of the Moscow territory and over 40 large cities in the surrounding region with FDD LTE networks. Meanwhile, MTS continues its aggressive LTE build-out in Russia’s regions; the company plans to cover approximately 600 population centres in Russia by the end of 2013.
