The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has confirmed that it has no plans to block messaging service WhatsApp, shutting down speculation that it would follow the lead of Saudi Arabia and Egypt in blocking the app. The Jordan Times quotes Mohammad Taani, chief commissioner of the TRC as saying: ‘We have not asked any of the country’s operators to block WhatsApp for any reason. We don’t coordinate with any country on this issue… We have no intention of blocking it.’ Rumours that the TRC would shut down the service in Jordan emerged after allegations that the Education Ministry employees had used the service to leak questions to secondary school students 30 minutes ahead of key tests. Saudi Arabia and Egypt had previously unveiled plans to block the app, citing commercial and security reasons.
