Only one FECOTEL member made a profit in 2012

Just one of the 15 members of Bolivian local telephony cooperatives association La Federacion de Cooperativas de Telecomunicaciones de Bolivia (FECOTEL) made a profit during 2012, BNamericas claims, citing local press reports. Only Cooperativa Mixta de Telecomunicaciones Cochabamba (COMTECO) was understood to have been profitable last year, although it was noted that this was predominantly a result of its stake in local wireless operator NuevaTel PCS, which trades under the Viva banner.

The claims comes after FECOTEL earlier this month called on the Bolivian government to allow cooperatives to take part in the upcoming sale of spectrum suitable for mobile services; the association has argued that being able to provide such services is a key strategy for the future.
