China Mobile launching VoLTE next year

27 Jun 2013

China Mobile plans to launch commercial voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) over its TDD-LTE network by the fourth quarter of 2014, its CEO Li Yue announced at the GTI Asia Conference in Shanghai, adding that the cellco – which this week launched a massive tender for the national build-out of its TD-LTE network – will begin testing VoLTE by the fourth quarter of this year ahead of a large-scale field trial in H1 2014. As reported by Telecomasia, Li expressed the hope that ‘VoLTE will become… a solution to integrate FDD and TDD [LTE technology variants].’ The executive’s speech highlighted VoLTE’s advantages over traditional circuit switched voice services at the conference, including the technology’s all-IP network architecture which can reduce costs and increase capacity significantly while supporting the launch of high-definition voice services and future applications.
