TIM Brasil slashes international roaming tariffs; plans fixed telephony launch

26 Jun 2013

Brazilian fixed and mobile operator TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) has launched a new mobile tariff plan for pre-paid customers, highlighting reductions of up to 60% on international roaming services. The carrier’s new service includes voice calls, SMS and mobile internet data, and is available in all countries worldwide. TIM Brasil claims to be the first Brazilian operator to launch such an offer, BNAmericas reports it as saying. However, the offer currently only runs until 30 September 2013 it notes, until which time voice calls made whilst abroad will be charged at BRL1.99 (USD0.89) per minute, data downloads will be BRL12.90 per MB (a 60% saving), and SMS fees will fall 34% to BRL0.99 from BRL1.50. Post-paid users are already catered for by TIM Brasil’s ‘Liberty Passport’ roaming plan.

In a separate development, TIM Brasil chief marketing officer Flavio Lang has said that ‘Live TIM’, the operator’s fibre-optic based broadband service, is looking to enter the fixed telephony segment from 1 January 2014. Initially focusing on the residential market, the new services will be sold separately from TIM’s current high speed internet packages – a divergence from other telcos which typically offer dual- or triple-play bundled services.

Earlier this week TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate reported TIM Brasil as saying that it plans to launch a business user version of its residential fibre-optic broadband service from 1 July. Marketed under the banner Live TIM Enterprise, the new fibre offer will reportedly offer dedicated IP links to business/corporate customers and tiered Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to enable faster and more constant data transmission speeds. It is understood that Live TIM Enterprise will be targeted at Brazil’s SME segment, leaving sister firm Intelig free to continue its focus on major enterprise customers. TIM Brasil hopes that from launch the new service will be available to around 50,000 businesses in Brazil, and available in two flavours: a 10Mbps package and a 30Mbps package – as well as having an exclusive customer support centre.
