Viva la difference! Saudi-backed cellco highlights network improvements

25 Jun 2013

Sean Smith, CTO at Viva Bahrain, has reported in an interview with CommsMEA that over the last twelve months the Saudi-backed cellco has carried out a raft of network/service improvements including: revamping its online charging platforms, optimising its traffic policing/control systems, upgrading the backhaul to 50% of its cell sites, investing in the creation of a DWDM fibre ring with full protection, and upgrading its core network to double the operator’s broadband data and circuit switched call capacity. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that Viva Bahrain upgraded its mobile network with 42Mbps DC-HSPA+ technology in May 2011, which reached ‘nationwide’ coverage in November that year, and it signaled its intention to evolve to the next level of high speed mobile services in January 2012 with the launch of a small-scale 4G LTE network with coverage of the ‘Bahrain City Centre’ retail and leisure complex in central Manama.
