According to an unconfirmed report by Telecompaper, Tele2 Russia has initiated a second trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology using its 1800MHz GSM frequencies. The tests, which are being conducted in cooperation with the Radio Scientific Research Institute (RSRI) in Kaluga, are scheduled for completion on 24 June. The 1800MHz trial follows a 1Q12 test that saw the company achieve downlink speeds of 75Mbps, without a negative impact on its existing voice services. Following the trial’s conclusion, the RSRI will send its findings to the State Radio Frequency Commission (SRFC) for consideration.
TeleGeography notes that in Russia, the 800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum bands are presently used to support LTE technology, with the regulatory authorities proving resistant to overtures from companies wishing to utilise alternative frequencies.
