Lonestar Cell launches Mobile Money service in Liberia

21 Jun 2013

MTN Liberia (Lonestar Cell) and the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) have launched a ‘Mobile Money’ service at the Guaranty Trust (GT) Bank Liberia Limited in Monrovia, The New Dawn reports. The new service is designed to provide increased ‘financial inclusion for all Liberians, both in rural and urban areas of the country’, the pair say, whilst also helping to bridge the gap between the many people in the country who do not possess a traditional bank account. Lonestar Cell CEO Tebogo Mogapi says his firm sees Mobile Money as an innovation solution for emerging markets, including many other countries where its parent MTN Group operates. Mobile Money was officially launched commercially in Liberia in partnership with Ecobank, with full approval of the CBL a year ago.
