Orange France has become the country’s first operator to launch rich communication service Joyn. Developed in collaboration with the GSM Association (GSMA), Joyn is a fully interoperable service, which allows for the transition of messaging and voice capabilities from Circuit Switched technology to an all-IP world. Customers can participate in chats, and enhance voice calls by simultaneously sending files and sharing images or videos. According to the company’s press release, subscribers can currently access the application by downloading ‘Joyn by Orange’ from the AppStore or Google Play; however, the service will be incorporated in several smartphones from 2014, including Sony Xperia Z, HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.
Joyn is currently available in nine countries including Spain, Germany and the US, and is supported by 14 operators including Orange, Vodafone, Movistar, Deutsche Telekom and MetroPCS. A further 27 operators in 17 countries have committed to launch the service. Orange Spain launched Joyn in November 2012, while the France Telecom-Orange group has scheduled further launches this year in Slovakia, Romania, Poland and Belgium.
