Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat), the United Arab Emirates’ incumbent telecoms operator, has introduced a new 4G LTE modem which enables customers to access mobile broadband download speeds of up to 150Mbps. According to Emirates News Agency (WAM), the Huawei Wi-Fi modems allow up to ten users to share the high speed internet connection simultaneously on their laptops, smartphones or tablets. Etisalat’s chief marketing officer, Khaled El Khouly, commented: ‘With the launch of the 4G LTE internet devices, Etisalat further empowers customers in the UAE by offering them the fastest and most reliable internet performance, linking multiple users to a single connection which they can access from wherever they are located.’ TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Etisalat unveiled its Long Term Evolution-Frequency Division Duplex (LTE-FDD) mobile broadband network in September 2011 and went on to launch commercial services the following December. The 4G network, which is integrated with Etisalat’s fibre-optic infrastructure, is available to over 80% of the UAE.
