Cabinet transfers WACS capacity from government to Telecom Namibia

17 Jun 2013

Namibia’s state cabinet has approved the transfer of submarine bandwidth capacity on the West Africa Cable System (WACS) from direct government ownership to Telecom Namibia, itself wholly state-owned via Namibia Post and Telecom Holdings. According to a report in The Namibian newspaper, the ownership transfer was made in exchange for ‘regional infrastructure, WACS maintenance, government network upgrading and free internet connectivity’. The cabinet also instructed that measures be put in place to ensure full utilisation of the WACS capacity, including commencing the implementation of an e-governance project ‘as a matter of urgency’.
