Board approves TOT’s 850,000-line fibre upgrade; searching for Wi-Fi funding

The board of Thai state-owned telco TOT has approved a plan to invest THB2.6 billion (USD83.8 million) next year to upgrade nearly 850,000 residential and business fixed lines on its network to fibre-optic technology, reports The Nation, quoting board chairman Udom Puasakul who said TOT would finance the project with its own cash flow. The plan must be approved by the ICT ministry, the National Economic & Social Development Board and the Cabinet. TOT is also currently working out means of financing the operation of its portion of the ICT ministry’s national free Wi-Fi project, amounting to THB2.86 billion, to be sourced via state agencies which could include the ministry itself, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) or other agencies, according to the telco’s board. The NBTC granted THB950 million to support TOT deploying 150,000 Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide over three years, but TOT says this amount covers only the equipment costs.
