Colombia’s Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (MinTIC) has extended a contract with Gilat Satellite Networks, for the latter to provide broadband to 1,500 schools in outlying areas. The Israel-based satellite company was originally enlisted in December 2011 to provide 2Mbps broadband to 1,500 schools across five districts as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide. Gilat’s previous contract was due to expire in early December 2013; the duration of the new extension, valued at USD6.75 million, was not made public.
