Italian WiMAX operator Linkem has revealed that it has launched Long Term Evolution (LTE) trials over the 3.5GHz spectrum used by its existing 4G service. In an interview with daily Corriere delle Comunicazioni, CEO Davide Rota admitted that ‘WiMAX technology is on the wane’, despite his company enjoying a degree of success with its wireless broadband service.
Rota noted that Linkem currently provides coverage to 31% of the population via 1,200 WiMAX base transceiver stations (BTS), and had notched up 129,300 subscribers by 8 May 2013. Going forward, he expects that Linkem will pass the 200,000 subscriber milestone by the end of the year. In financial terms, break-even point is expected in spring 2014, while the company’s 2013 turnover should reach EUR35 million (USD45.8 million), around double the figure generated in 2012.
