DoT considers burying the hatchet

5 Jun 2013

Sector regulator the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is considering reducing penalties on telcos and holding talks to settle outstanding disputes in a bid to ease tensions between providers and authorities, the Economic Times writes, citing an unnamed senior official. ‘Trust deficit between the two sides has emerged. We wish to restore trust and take this sector forward together’ the official was quoted as saying. Under the plans, the DoT would distinguish between technical or administrative errors on the part of telecoms providers and deliberate violations of regulations and alter its response accordingly. In a similar vein, the DoT would reign-in its use of the maximum applicable penalty, instead determining fines based on the severity of the infraction.
