AFTEL inks deal for second phase of SILK

30 May 2013

State-backed Afghan Telecom (AFTEL) has signed a deal with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) as part of latter’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, marking the launch of the second phase of the SILK Afghanistan operation, which aims to extend fibre-optic broadband to Afghan universities and government institutions. To date the SILK programme has extended broadband to 18 universities across the country and a number of government offices in Kabul. The second phase of the EUR750,000 (USD967,110) programme will see the partnership extend fibre-optic infrastructure to four sites in the capital and 13 sites throughout the country’s other regions.
