29 May 2013

Digitel, the smallest of Venezuela’s three mobile network operators, with a 19.7% share of subscribers at the end of 2012, has revealed plans to commence a pilot project of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in Caracas. TeleSemana reports that the initial coverage ‘circuit’ will include the towns of Altamira, Los Palos Grandes and La Castellana. Going forward, coverage will be extended in the coming months to areas such as La Urbina and El Rosal-Las Mercedes.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in September 2012 following a tender for licences held by Conatel, Digitel won a 2×15MHz allocation of 1800MHz spectrum, which it immediately declared was earmarked for a rollout of Venezuela’s first commercial LTE services.
