Telekom inks new satellite deal; no interest in government’s stake

22 May 2013

Serbian fixed line incumbent Telekom Srbija has signed a multi-year deal with satellite firm SES for broadband capacity on the ASTRA 3B satellite, the latter announced yesterday. Telekom Srbija currently leases capacity from SES to provide direct-to-home (DTH) services, although under the new agreement the telco will utilise the capacity for TV, radio and internet data services.

In separate news, Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has confirmed that at present there are no companies interested in purchasing the government’s stake in Telekom Srbija, adding that the government must now assess whether it is possible to find a buyer or strategic partner in the telco. News portal B92 quotes the PM as saying that whilst the matter will be on the agenda for several months, the government’s priorities lie elsewhere.
