SingTel looking to expand pay-TV reach to international markets

According to ZDNet, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) is considering plans to expand the reach of its Mio pay-TV service beyond its domestic market, as part of a wider shift from voice services to data/video. Allen Lew, chief executive of SingTel’s Digital Life unit, said: ‘We’ll look at where are the opportunities, how big those markets are going to be, how strong is our telco presence and what’s the value-add from TV.’ It is likely that businesses in countries with an existing mobile footprint will receive ‘extra attention’ to get pay-TV off the ground there, although no details have been divulged on where the expansion might take place. SingTel has associate ventures in Australia (SingTel Optus), Indonesia (Telkomsel), Thailand (AIS), the Philippines (Globe Telecom) and India (Bharti Airtel). It also has a licence in Myanmar.
