TracFone swallows up Page Plus Cellular after inking second major MVNO takeover

21 May 2013

Mexico-based America Movil has announced that its US mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) subsidiary TracFone Wireless has acquired Start Wireless’ Page Plus Cellular reseller operation, which currently counts around 1.4 million customers. The deal represents TracFone’s second major acquisition in the space of twelve months, after its purchase of T-Mobile’s Simple Mobile MVNO in May last year. The Mexican company expects the transaction to close in 2Q13, pending regulatory approvals.

TracFone, which is based in Miami, Florida, reported a subscriber base of 23.23 million as at 31 March 2013. The company purchases cellular airtime on a wholesale basis for resale from more than 30 US wireless service providers, which enables it to claim nationwide coverage and the widest reach of any US operator.
