21 May 2013

Despite a recent announcement from Apple Inc that it had enabled Long Term Evolution (LTE) support for the iPhone 5 on the Cell C network, the South African operator is not yet ready to commercially launch the service. In a statement on the MyBroadband forum, a Cell C representative said: ‘Cell C will notify customers when the company launches LTE to its general customer base’. When pressed for more details, the cellco said that it has not yet outlined a timeframe for its 4G launch. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Cell C switched on its LTE network in Cape Town and Durban on a trial basis in December 2012, before extending coverage to Johannesburg and Pretoria in early 2013.
