Govt revokes Claro pay-TV licence

14 May 2013

The government of Uruguay has cancelled America Movil-owned Claro’s licence to provide satellite pay-TV services on the grounds that the concession is not valid, reports BNamericas. The concession, which was awarded by telecoms regulator Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Comunicaciones (URSEC) in October 2008, was initially revoked by the government in 2009, but in February this year a local court ruled that the licence annulment went against the company’s acquired rights and was bad for competition in the market. Claro Uruguay was expecting to launch pay-TV services in the coming months; the company’s CEO Horacio Alavarellos said the operator is considering legal action over the government’s latest decision.
