Warid takeover gets green light

10 May 2013

Sector regulator the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has approved the purchase of Warid Uganda by Bharti Airtel, local news outlet Daily Monitor reports. The deal, which will combine Uganda’s second- and fourth- largest cellcos, marks the first in-market acquisition by Bharti Airtel and represents the first major drive towards consolidation in the crowded sector. As a result of the takeover the Indian group’s local subsidiary will draw level with market leader MTN Uganda; Airtel and Warid had a combined market share of 38.9% at end-2012 compared to MTN’s 39.5% at that date. As reported by CommsUpdate, the South African-based company revealed last week that it was also considering acquisitions in Uganda but stopped short of naming potential targets.
