CITC to introduce new digit to area codes

Saudi Arabia’s Communication and Information Technology Commission (CITC) has announced its plans to change the current nine-digit landline telephone system by adding an extra digit to the six geographical zone codes, in order to increase the range of numbers available for public communications services, The transition will be implemented by the CITC in stages, with Riyadh geographic area set to be the first zone to add the digit 1 to its code by the end of 1H 2013, while three months later the new codes will be introduced to the rest of the geographic areas of the Kingdom. According to the announcement posted on CITC’s website, the zone codes for Riyadh – 01, Makkah – 02, Eastern Region – 03, Madinah – 04, Qassim – 06 and Southern Region – 07 will be converted to 011, 012, 013, 014, 016 and 017. The introduction of the new area codes will affect the method of dialling to fixed lines outside the local calling area, or when executing a call from a mobile to fixed line.
