Telecom Italia to bring fibre to 125 cities by 2015; VDSL2 technology poised for launch

1 May 2013

Telecom Italia’s in-deployment fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) network covers 31 Italian cities and has seen around 15,000 cabinets connected, director of technology Roberto Opilio has revealed in an interview with Corriere delle Comunicazioni. Of those cabinets, 2,500 have been activated for service, offering fibre coverage to around 3.6 million households. Opilio anticipates that some 20,000 cabinets will be connected to fibre by the end of 2013, with the number of cities covered due to grow to 100 in 2014, rising to 125 in 2015. He also noted that Telecom Italia’s VDSL2 rollout is ‘proceeding according to plan’ and will be launched on a commercial basis shortly.
