Onexim Group reconsiders Rostelecom stake deal

24 Apr 2013

Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov’s Onexim Group has indicated that it may consider buying a 10.7% stake in state-run national operator Rostelecom from Marshall Capital (MarCap), after the fund annulled a recent deal with construction tycoon Arkady Rotenberg. Bloomberg quotes Onexim CEO Dmitry Razumov as saying: ‘We were interested in buying the stake from Konstantin Malofeev, but talks were stopped by the deal with Rotenberg. We may still consider it if the opportunity presents itself’.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, MarCap cancelled the sale of its stake in state-backed Rostelecom to Rotenberg on 10 April after the parties failed to agree on the final terms of the deal, which was first announced in February this year. Prior to Rotenberg’s interest, Onexim was widely considered to be the front-runner for the stake, Russian media reports suggested.
