8ta receives new number allocation

According to MyBroadband.co.za, Telkom Mobile (8ta) has been allocated the 061 number range for use from this week, complementing its existing 081 number range. Going forward, 8ta customers will be assigned a number in one of the following ranges: 081 100 0000 to 081 799 9999 or 061 400 0000 to 061 499 9999. The introduction of the new number range offers proof that the operator’s ambitions to significantly grow its mobile subscriber base are still intact. The cellular unit has found it difficult to gain a foothold in the fiercely competitive South African mobile market since its October 2010 launch, and accounted for just 1.5 million subscribers at 31 December 2012, equivalent to a market share of just 2.2%.
